However, the outlet revealed on Thursday April 8 that there was no change in the brain of DMX.
News first broke that X was in poor health on April 3, when the alleged overdose was first reported by TMZ. According to their report, the overdose took place at X’s New York home at around 11 p.m. He was then rushed to a hospital in White Plains, New York, where he was admitted to intensive care. Rick Ross was the first rapper to send his best wishes to X, then others like Swizz Beatz, Eminem, Kid Cudi, Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes followed. A silver lining came when X’s attorney Murray Richman told New York’s PIX11 News that X had been removed the breathing support and was breathing on his own in the afternoon of April 3. However, Murray later admitted receiving false information on the improved health of the MC.
Following the announcement of the DMX family arriving by his side, a representative for artist Def Jam issued a statement. “Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons was rushed to hospital last night after collapsing at home. At that time, he remains in intensive care in critical condition,” the statement said. Earl has been a warrior his entire life. This situation represents another path he must conquer. Unfortunately, X couldn’t get out of it.
DMX, born Earl Simmons, had a high-profile battle with drug addiction throughout his career, which he spoke about and hit openly. Considered one of the most influential rappers of the late 1990s and 2000s, DMX breathed new life into the rap game with the release of his debut album, It’s dark and hell is hot, in 1998, led by hit singles like “Get at Me Dog”, “Ruff Ryders Hymn” and “Stop Being Greedy”. He continued the same year with his second effort, Flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood, and became the first artist to release two platinum albums in one year. He went on to release eight solo studio albums in total and immersed himself in acting with major roles in films like Belly, Romeo must die and Exit injuries.
Throughout his career, X has struggled to balance fame and stay on track. He had been arrested several times over the past two decades and had served a sentence one year in prison for tax evasion, for which he was released in 2019. In September 2019, he signed a new recording contract with Def Jam, finding his first major label at home. A month later he entered a drug rehab center. In August 2020, he announced that he was working on his first album since 2015 Redemption of the beast with frequent collaborator Swizz Beatz.
