Lil durk isn’t a newcomer to the rap scene, but over the past year or so he has had an apparent resurgence which is evident in his memorable run for success. He offered alley-oops on songs from other artists like Drake’s “Laugh Now Cry Laughter” “Back in Blood” by Pooh Shiesty and the remix of “No More Parties” by Coi Leray, which recently achieved RIAA Gold status. But when Durkio doesn’t add additional layers to other artists’ records, he’s making his own bangers on his signature production that emerging producers are trying to emulate, which can also be thought of as Lil Durk-type beats.
In December 2020, Durk released his sixth album, The voice, with the Deluxe Edition arriving in January of this year. A strong supporter of the rapper-singer atmosphere, Lil Durk has become a master of melodic trap-rap music. And in doing so, he developed a knack for using instrument-heavy backdrops to serve as the backbone to his melodious cadence, which is typically soul and piano. On “The Voice,” released in 2020, and built by beatsmiths TurnmeupJosh, LowLowTurnMeUp and Ayo Bleu, the keys are soft but rich and bright while supporting a subtle bass and warm guitar strings.
The thing about Durk, however, is that his beats range from medium tempo to high energy and he sometimes comes back to Chicago exercise, but adds an up-to-date flavor. “Stay Down”, the second single from The voice The album, which was produced by Metro Boomin and DY, has a slightly pulsating bass with irregular rhythms. At times the drums are more prominent and other times the synths steal the show.
The Chi-town native, who made waves in the early 2010s in his hometown’s pioneering drilling scene, offered an elevated drill track in January this year, complete with drum hits and touches of Euphoric piano on “Finesse Out the Gang Way” with Lil Baby, which Lil Durk is supposed to drop a new mixtape with in the near future.
Then there is the “3 Headed Goat” designed by Cicero and Aviator Keyyz from Durkio’s 2020 album, Just because you’ve all been waiting 2, also starring Lil Baby and fellow Chicago rapper Polo G. The fierce but energetic track includes a dark and menacing production. Starting with a continuum of harmonics, sounds are balanced by muffled bass.
Lil durk presents a duality of rhythmic melodies while delivering sounds for the streets. On his 2019 album, Love songs 4 the streets 2, there are haunting and mischievous sensations through piercing drums, as on the “Like That” produced by DY with the late King Von, which was signed at Durk Only the family label before his tragic death last November.
In the last 10 years that Durkio has been in the rap game, his lyrical and beat-picking ability has expanded. However, it has been unwavering in offering a balance of adjacent R&B tracks and 808 bass drum articulations like the smooth and sultry. “Like Me” with Chicago crooner Jeremih, which appeared on the rapper’s debut album in 2015, Remember my name, and is produced by Vinylz, Boi-1da and Allen Ritter. And let’s not forget his penchant for the sinister beats that can be heard on the “Money Walk” produced by DonisBeats with Yo Gotti on Lil Durk 2X, which fell in 2016.
