On Sunday, May 30, a video surfaced of Leray performing at the H-Town Memorial Day Mayhem Event at Toyota Center in Houston Saturday (May 29). In the 14 second clip, the crowd seems to be unresponsive to watching Leray’s performance. The video generated a deluge of unfavorable comments from people on Twitter.
In response to the clip that went viral, Leray took to her Twitter account to discuss the video and felt it was being unfairly attacked by people on social media.
One person said: “Coi Leray’s situation in Houston is a good example of why artists shouldn’t club. It’s hard to find your audience with a bunch of people who just paid to party. “
Another wrote: “Lmfao why did tf Houston do this last night.”
Responding to reactions to his performance, Coi wrote in a series of tweets, “Love got the better of hate, but now hate wins over love and it’s slowing down as it destroys me.” You are all haters in my life for a reason, we’re going to have to take care of each other. With any smoke.
“damnnnnn it’s hard to be so viralllll I swear the pressure is onnnnnnnnnnn … I AM THE EEE PRESS,” she continued.
After reading Leray’s disheartening tweets, Nicki took to Twitter to defend her performance and offered her support to the rapper in the making.
“Don’t do that. Chin up. Always remember that, when black people don’t fkn w | you # TheyWillBoo,” Nicki wrote. “These people were standing. It means they might not know the song, but wanted to know more, so they were watching you. Load it into the game and move on.”
Nicki’s advice must have boosted Leray’s morale. She replied to queen barbz, thanking her for her words of encouragement. “Thank you so much for that. It means everything and more to me. Wow. I’m speechless. You just gave me so much more hope. Thanks again,” she replied in a tweet.
Rapper Polo G also gave the “No More Parties” artist some advice on Twitter. “It’s always like that when you first walk in versus when you really explode, you have to block that shit and keep going crazy, you get it,” the Chicago rapper tweeted.
“You’re all going to stop playing with the coi like she ain’t a STAR,” Rubi tweeted, while Asian wrote: “Awwww love how we all had @coi_leray today after the seeing her so depressed even Nicki gave her her flowers and honestly it makes me so happy to see us standing up for ourselves and uplifting ourselves, especially when we call each other ‘friends’. “
Asian then added, “You got your back forever… I love you more SUPER STAR COI.”
Later that day, Coi appeared more optimistic when she took to her Instagram Live to address the viral clip and negative comments on the video. During the live broadcast, Coi explains that artists are under pressure from fans, but that’s not much to do because rhymes will always be subject to opinions and criticism.
