Creation of XXL First year coverage and its supporting content is generally a hectic but rewarding experience during the day of filming, who fell in Atlanta in May of this year. The selected artists are pulled in different directions throughout the day, and apart from getting together to hear the beat of the number, they don’t often have time to sit and converse with each other. The roundtable interview discussions that follow each number offer them this opportunity, with Pink Ruby, Winnie the Pooh, Flo milli and 42 Dugg being the last group to share their thoughts on the whole experience.
Lexington, Ky. Native Pink Ruby talks about the festive nature of the day’s events and meets people who have secured a seat in the same elevator to the top. “Today was super bright, super cool,” she says. “The number was a little scary. Everything else was a cinch, fun. And it was cool meeting my first year classmates.”
Flo milli adds to that, explaining that while there was a sense of pressure to capitalize on the platform, the energy was hotter than expected. “It kind of shows a light energy,” says the talent of Mobile, Alabama. “Like you can’t be too serious about it and shit. But I really think it’s like a big milestone for successful people out there. Because like, you only get a certain amount and he has such a big platform, so i think it’s great to be here.
The 2021 XXL Freshmen also spend time discussing their musical influences, tracing the ingredients they used to create their own stylistic concoction. 42 Dugg, Detroit’s most prominent young artist at the moment, Jeezy and Yo Gotti credits like his inspirations. “Just because they were talking about the shit I was going through or the shit I was going through,” says the man who ate of his recent release Free Dem Boyz. “So I’ll probably say them, as far as the music goes. That’s all I was listening to, for real.”
The four artists also flex their awareness of what makes them special. For Memphis breeding Winnie the Pooh, it’s about having a fresh new flavor. “Talk about something different instead of just mumbling rap…” says the platinum-selling rapper. “A different style, you must have your own sauce.”
Or else you’re lost, like her label header Gucci Mane once said.
