The break presents: SpotemGottem – XXL

The first few years of an artist’s life tend to be the most memorable, and few know this better than SpotemGottem. The Jacksonville, Florida native, who has made his way everywhere this year thanks to the viral hit of his song “Beat Box”, picked up the rap art of his uncles at just 9 years old. Watching them freestyle together would inspire him later in life, when he started rapping at age 14 and started posting his own freestyles on the internet. These verses caught the attention of rap blog Say Cheese, which made a deal with Spotem to promote their music, even though it didn’t have any official songs at the time.

Marked by his deliberate style, peppered with dark humor and near-action-movie descriptions of street issues, SpotemGottem began to gain traction with his songs three years ago. His first track was “Street Gossip” at the end of 2018. From there he continued to work, abandoning the five-piece mixtape. Osama history in 2019. This preparatory work led him to release “Beat Box” in April 2020, which has now been streamed over 100 million times on Spotify, thanks to the popularity of the original song, the virality TikTok and countless remixes.

“Bur-bur-burn a carbon beam, knocked your legs off / I tried to pull away, I had a stand-off / Hit them in the spine, knock down his dreads / My woadie just grabbed a body, I nicknamed him Randy Moss / Thuggin ‘in my Reeboks, riding a G-Shock / Shhh, I heard he was shooting, Draco is doing a beat box “, he rapped on the heavy bass banger produced by Damn E.

Winnie the Pooh was the first rapper to jump on the official “Beat Box” remix in December 2020. The track appears on SpotemGottem’s Final destination project, released the same month. The song’s viral factor is due to a backing dance created by TikTok personality June Elite in December of last year. Aptly titled the Junebug Challenge, the dance involves spasm-like body jerks while pumping the arms up and down, much like what Spotem does at the 1:13 mark of the visual remix with Pooh Shiesty. It opened the floodgates for some of hip-hop’s most popular young rappers, including DaBaby, Latto and NLE Choppa to add their own rhymes to the beat this year. There are currently five official remixes.

After signing to Rebel / Geffen Records about a month ago, the rising rapper then abandoned his new 12-track project, Most Wanted, in May. As new music and other “Beat Box” remixes continue to pour in, SpotemGottem spoke to XXL via Zoom for this week’s edition of The break.

Age: 19

Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida.

I grew up listening to: “I grew up listening Lil boosie, Webbie, Master P, Cannon boys, shit like that. “

My style has been compared to: “No one really. But you know, people say Kodak [Black], but it’s just because I’m from Florida. But they know that once they listen to my bullshit, they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, he’s from Florida, but he’s got his own style.’ “

I’m going to explode because: “I just have to make music. Now I have to make music.
new fans. You know, when you come, that’s all you want, it’s fans, fame. And once you get the hang of it, you just have to go harder. And just tell them where you’re from. “

What’s your sleepiest song and why? : “Damn. I don’t know. I have a few, like three of them really. People always know I’m going to go crazy. I’m going to let go of more shit and it’s just going to get tough. One here should be. get a lot more likes, a lot more views. This ‘Same Day’ slut is going to be tough. I had it about five months ago. I got a lot bigger than since when I posted it, so I I’m just gonna post it. “

My most significant records to date have been: “[‘Beat Box.’] Really, all I was looking for was the hit, and I found it. I was staying in the studio all night, all day, just trying to get a hit, and I found one. Everyone noticed me. They were like ‘Oh yeah, that’s hard.’ And we’re just going to make it better. That’s when DaBaby got on this bitch. NLE Choppa, Mulatto, everyone just started, can you feel me? “

My highlights so far have been: “When I blew up ‘Beat Box’, that was the most important moment. I lit a nigga, so everything is cool. I see they got people in China doing it, until Africa and shit. So like, ‘Oh yeah. That bitch from all over the world. And then Junebug just made it better.’

Most people don’t know: “I’m vibrating. I’m a cool little guy. I’m chilling out, man. The gang’s on shit on. We’re just having fun, can you feel me?”

I’ll be next: “Millionaire.”
