Will spent nearly $ 100,000 to help Crescent City fund its annual Independence Day fireworks display on the Mississippi River, local New Orleans media reported 4WWL Saturday (July 3). The generous donation of the rapper-actor prevented the event from happening. Smith, who shot a new movie in the New Orleans area called Emancipation, made bread for the show after finding out New Orleans had no plans for a show this year due to monetary issues. The fireworks did not take place last year either. It was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“While he [Will Smith] and the production was in town to prepare for the shoot, [he] fell in love with the city of New Orleans and wanted citizens and visiting tourists to enjoy the annual celebratory fireworks, ”city officials said in the statement.
Will’s sizable donation covered permits, public safety, equipment, fireworks and more. “When people called me they said Will Smith wanted an A-plus show. I said, well he gets an A-plus-plus show, ”said David Spear, of AFX Pro, LLC, the company that hosted the fireworks and others in the South.
Will was initially recording the new film in Georgia, but moved production to New Orleans after Georgia passed a controversial new election law that many say was put in place to prevent black people from voting.
